Rick Rodriguez Bio
Richard “Rick” Rodriguez is a native Houstonian
and a 24-year veteran of the Houston Police
Department. He was born on January 27, 1963 and
is a product of public schools, attending the
Houston Independent School District's DeZavala
Elementary, Edison Jr. High and Austin High School.
A Love of the Game
While growing up in Houston's East End, Rick
enjoyed playing the favorite past time of baseball. At
an early age, he played for Magnolia National Little
League at Hidalgo Park. In 1975, he was a member
of the Magnolia National Little League all-star team.
The first team to win district and to advance to the
State Tournament in Waco. Although the team was
defeated by Corpus Christi, Magnolia defeated
Sagemont and became the city champs.
Rick’s athletic career continued in junior high, he
played football, basketball and ran cross-country. At

football and baseball teams. After graduating in the
top 15% of his class, Rick went on to attend San
Jacinto Jr. College on a scholarship from the East
End Rotary Club. Here, he walked on and made the
baseball team as a catcher and designated hitter.
Rick continued to play amateur ball locally for the
Latin American League. It took him to many
ballparks around the city. In 1983, while a member
of the Latin American league all-star team, he had
the honor of playing in the Astrodome during an
all-star game between the Latin American League
and the Mexican League. During this game, Rick hit
a home run becoming one of the very few amateurs
to do so in the Astrodome.
Law Enforcement Career
In May of 1986, Rick joined the Houston Police
Department. He graduated with Class #135 and
began his career patrolling in the Heights and
Northside neighborhoods. In 1988, Rick was
transferred to the Southwest Patrol Division. Later
that same year, he was transferred to the downtown
city jail, however he quickly returned to the
Southwest Division in 1989.
For 11 years, he was assigned to the Gulfton Police
Storefront where he worked on the front lines in
community-oriented policing. The Gulfton
community has the highest population density in
Houston It is a large predominantly immigrant
apartment community. In addition to regularly riding
bicycle patrol in this neighborhood, he served as
the primary liaison officer to many businesses,
civics, schools and church organizations.
While working from the storefront in Gulfton, Rick
became the police liaison to numerous local civic
